FAQ
Where are the classes held?
Classes are held at the Sport & Health Fitness Club, located in the Central Park Shopping Complex, 1191 Central Park Boulevard, Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Do I have to be a member of the fitness club?
No. Smoother than Smooth classes are a separate entity from the fitness club. However, you may join the fitness club if you desire.
Do I need to bring a partner?
No. To join with a partner is a great idea, but it is not mandatory.
Do I have to attend every class?
No. Classes are structured from a syllabus to insure steady progress, so that you are learning something new each week. We send out weekly updates (class review) via email to keep you informed as to what was taught the previous week. The Assistant Lead Instructor will also work one-on-one with you if necessary, to bring you up to speed. We do hope you can attend each class, but it certainly is not mandatory.
What do I wear to class?
Dress comfortably, preferably in breathable fabrics (cotton, spandex, etc.). Hand dancing is an excellent aerobic workout and you will probably workup a sweat!
What about shoes?
Ladies and Gentlemen should wear shoes with a suede or leather sole. Hand dancing is generally done on wooden floors and consists of various turns and spins; rubber soles (i.e. tennis shoes) are not conducive to spins and turns on wooden floors. Ladies are encouraged to wear enclosed shoes with flat or very low heels.
Can I bring my child?
Smoother than Smooth classes are not structured to accommodate small children at this time. However, in case of an emergency, the Sport & Health Fitness Club has a supervised Day Care Center that offers a comfortable place for children to play. For Emergencies Only!
How long are the classes?
The Beginner and Intermediate class sessions are both 15 weeks long, and each individual class is approximately one (1) hour and 15 minutes. The Intermediate/Advanced Workshop is an ongoing workshop for those students who have completed both 15 week sessions (graduates) and wish to further enhance their hand dancing skills. This class is approximately one (1) hour and 45 minutes.
How do I know which class I should take?
Our Beginner classes are geared toward the brand new student with little or no hand dance experience.
The Intermediate classes are for those students that have a good grasp of basic hand dancing techniques and are ready for the next level of instruction. The Intermediate/Advanced Workshop, as previously mentioned, is for the student that has already completed the Beginner and Intermediate Classes (graduates), has a solid grasp of basic hand dancing techniques and executions and is ready for the next level of instruction. For the new student who chooses to enroll in the Intermediate or Intermediate/Advanced Workshop, one of our certified instructors will assess their hand dancing skills just to make sure they are in the class best suited for their skill level.
If I get tired is it OK to take a rest break?
Yes. We encourage our students to take a break at any point that they are winded or feel tired. We want you to be comfortable at all times, enjoy yourself, and have fun while learning to hand dance.
Where can I buy dance shoes?
You can find a list of Merchants and Miscellaneous Information under the Additional Information Section on our Website.
